What Are The Benefits of Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been practiced in China for thousands of years. Though its history in the US is considerably shorter than that, studies have shown it to be a safe and effective treatment for a variety of ailments, including:

Arthritis
Asthma
Backache
Depression
Headaches
Insomnia
Menstrual Problems
Migraine
Neck pain
Obesity
Sciatica
Smoking Cessation
Stroke recovery
Tendinitis

Doctors also prescribe acupuncture in combination with other therapies to speed healing and pain relief after surgery or chemotherapy.

What To Expect During Your Visits

During your first visit to the acupuncturist, she will compile detailed information about your health history, current health issues, your lifestyle and habits. In addition to any treatments or medications you're taking, the acupuncturist needs to know any behaviors (such as anger or smoking) that contribute to your condition in order to set you on the path to balance and wellness.

Acupuncture, as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is focused on the balance of energy in your body (yin and yang), and keeping that energy (Qi) flowing. Acupuncture needles are inserted along the body's energy paths to remove blockages or stimulate the flow of qi. Most people feel little to no pain from acupuncture needles. The needles themselves are extremely thin, and acupuncture has few, if any, side effects when performed by a qualified practioner. Depending on your body, you may feel relaxed or full of energy after each visit. The number of treatments you need will depend on your condition and how your body responds to acupuncture.
